38-year-old LeBron James will embark on his 21st NBA season and his sixth season with the Los Angeles Lakers. As a four-time NBA champion and four-time MVP, his ultimate goal is to play alongside Bronny in the NBA, as he becomes eligible next year.
James revealed to Athletics in 2022, “My last season will be played with my son. Wherever Bronny goes, I’ll be there too. I’ll do anything to play alongside my son for a year. It’s not about the money at that point.”
At the ESPY Awards two weeks ago, James stood on stage with his wife Savannah and their sons Bronny, Bryce, and daughter Zhuri, calling them the “biggest blessing” of his life.
With a gesture toward his teenage sons, he said, “Tonight, I stand here extremely proud of these two right here. See, they’re on their basketball journey, and no matter how far they go, they’re not cheating the game. And that inspires me.”
Cardiac arrest and sports
“Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating due to electrical malfunction. If not treated immediately, it can be fatal, but as per the American Heart Association, it can be reversed with CPR and defibrillation shocks.
Sudden cardiac arrest is rare in young athletes, but not unheard of. According to a 2011 study, sudden cardiac-related deaths were the leading cause of mortality in 45 cases of NCAA student-athletes between 2004 and 2008, averaging around 9 deaths annually.
One of the most notable cases was Loyola Marymount University’s star forward, Hank Gathers, who tragically collapsed during a conference tournament game in 1990 and lost his life.
To address such incidents, an NCAA task force issued guidelines in 2016, urging universities to develop an emergency action plan for sudden cardiac arrest and practice accordingly.
USC’s medical staff
USC’s medical staff has had recent experience with such an event. Last July, USC’s new forward, Vins Ivuchukwu, faced cardiac arrest during summer workouts. In a video posted on Twitter at the beginning of the year, Ivuchukwu explained that he felt dizzy during a water break and collapsed.
USC said that athletic trainers, including John Yanamain, Erin Tilman, and Lauren Crawford, performed CPR on him and brought him back to life. Ivuchukwu recovered and finally made his basketball debut in January, six months later.
Hamlin tweeted on Tuesday, “Prayers for Bronny and the James family too.” “You guys here have been as present for me throughout my recovery process.”
Hamlin later revealed that his cardiac arrest was due to commotio cordis.
Commotio cordis can occur when a severe impact to the chest disrupts the heart’s electrical impulse and leads to dangerous fibrillation.
Following the tackle, Hamlin experienced cardiac arrest, and it seemed like his chest suffered an impact even with a helmet on.
